Last week I was in Tucson for a couple of days at a retreat for my job. At one point, we came across a huge tile floor and of course I started doing what few b-boy moves I know in hopes of impressing my peers. They weren’t impressed. They just kind of watched. Ya know, that kind of watching to be nice but it’s not really cool type of watching.
I learned a few things. One of them being that dancing on tile and dancing on carpet is a lot different. On tile, I’m able to move around more freely while doing floor moves whereas dancing barefoot on carpet is not exactly the best place to b-boy.
The second thing I learned is that I’m actually getting better because I can do things I couldn’t do the first day. What a pleasant surprise. Practice makes perfect, they say. And I think “they” are right.
The most exciting part about today was learning the three-step. It’s a little more flashy than the six-step, and I’m glad I can officially add it to my repertoire of moves.
Footwork is cooler than I thought. My dream has always been to do power moves and power moves only (like windmills, 1990s, etc.). But today, after learning the three-step and then learning how to link it to a six-step I realized how much I actually like footwork. Without some sweet looking footwork to go into the power moves, there’s no style at all.
I also practiced to a new song today: Block Rockin’ Beats by the Chemical Brothers. By the end of my experiment, I’d like to have a playlist of around twenty phat songs to break to. I need your help to choose the best. Comment on this post with any suggestions you have for music.
Tip of the day: Tell five of your friends that you’re learning how to breakdance for accountability.
Follow the experiment on Twitter. And friend me on Facebook.
