After watching some sick muay thai knockouts with my roommate on YouTube, I moved the table from our living room and began day two of my b-boy experiment.
I like the idea of getting a cardio workout from this whole thing, so I’m going to keep my “dancing around for 30 minutes while doing handstands in between” as a part of my routine. In addition to handstands, I like to throw in some freezes, agility moves, and any footwork that I’m learning. This piece is essential because I need to learn how to feel the rhythm and beat during songs. If I’m breaking in my own little world without listening to the music, I’m going to look really stupid.
During part two of practice (where I work on individual moves), I worked on my six-step again. I went a little faster this time around so I can do the move at normal speed. My guess is I’ll be perfecting this for the rest of my experiment.
I went ahead and tried toprock next. This basic step is cool because it’s the foundation for standing footwork. The most helpful videos were the ones from MonkeySee and B-boy Perpetual. Both those dudes break it down well for beginners.
At this point, I have zero personal style in my toprock. I just want to get the basics down right now. I’m sure my personal style will develop over time. After practicing toprock in silence for awhile, I turned on “Ch-ch Check It Out” from the Beastie Boys (one of my new favorite songs) to see if I could actually do it on beat.
I could. And it felt so….so…..good.
Tip of the day: Take the time to get the basics down so you can easily add your own personal style later on.
