Breaking is different than lifting weights at the gym. In fact, it’s a lot more fun and you’re able to do something cool-looking with your strength. My only motivation for going to the gym is to look good in a medium shirt. Not good enough. On the other hand, exercising to be able to do a windmill in a dance circle is tight.
Today, my workout plan was really simple: Put on some hip hop music and then dance around for 30 minutes while doing handstands in between. At least that’s how today started.
Since I have no idea what I’m doing, I’m making it up as I go along. Towards the end of my 30 minute solo dance-off, I searched for some YouTube videos on how to do some moves. In my research before starting this whole experiment, it seems like the main three basic moves are toprock, the six-step, and dropping.
It’s hard to know who to believe on YouTube since anyone can upload a video about anything. You have to weed out the dudes who are really bad. I settled on watching and applying B-boy Perpetual’s tutorial on how to six-step and Tim Ferriss’ (the 4-Hour Workweek dude) tips.
Every b-boy I’d ever heard talk about the six-step said it was foundational so I’m going to take my time getting it down. The actual steps are way easier than I expected, and are totally doable for anyone who has at least some body weight strength and can count to six. The hard part will be learning how to do it rhythmically and on beat during a song. Not to mention adding my own little style to it.
After less than an hour of dancing, I was beat. To celebrate the beginnings of my experiment, I enjoyed a tall glass of milk and sat on my leather couch soaking in my new life as a b-boy.
Next time, I’m taking on toprock.
Tip of the day: Celebrate your first day with food you like afterwards.
