Day 23: linking toprock together

My main focus today was linking my toprock together so it can look as smooth as silk.

It didn’t happen.

I still think about it too much.  In my head I’m like, “okay, after two more twists I’m going to hop back into crossover toprock and then I’m going to do a drop.”  Is it like that for more experienced b-boys and b-girls?  Or do ya’ll just feel it and move?

I developed this routine where I do all the toprock I know in one direction, then I do each one in circles, then I link them all together.  By the way, is everything we do standing called toprock?  Or footwork?  Or both?

I’m trying to learn hip twists again.  I can never hit the beat when I learn them, and it makes me think that I’m missing a step.  Can anyone send me a link to a good tutorial?

Tip of the day: Ask questions about b-boying to people who know more than you do.

Day 22: again and again and again

Today I realized something.  That I’m doing a lot of the same moves over and over again.  For a second I thought, “Oh, I need to learn a ton of new moves.”  But then I remembered that I’m only on day 22 of my 100 day experiment.

And to actually get really good at something you have to do it again and again and again.  For years.

All that to say, I’ll still be adding moves as time goes on but it’s just as important that I refine the skills I’m already working on.

Tip of the day: You don’t have to learn a new move everyday.

Day 21: I didn’t want to but I did it

I filmed my day 20 update video last night at midnight.  That’s the only time my friend and videographer Ethan was able to meet.

Today is a day I normally dance.  And if I’m honest, today I didn’t want to.  I mean – after rocking the house last night I figure I deserved a day’s rest.

But ya know what?  I practiced anyway.  Here’s why: because there’s never been a time where after I danced I said, “I can’t believe I just practiced.  That was so stupid.”  And I don’t think I will ever say that.

This is what I like to a call “motivation to keep going when you get really tired and you want to not exercise one day and then it gets easier to not go the next day and then you give up and quit and feel horrible about yourself and start over again when new year’s resolutions come around and then the whole cycle repeats again.”

I didn’t want to but I did it.  And it was worth every second.

Tip of the day: Cliché but true, don’t give up and keep practicing.

Day 20: I’m ready for the video

I’ll be filming my day 20 update video soon.  Here’s some of the new moves you should expect to see:

Some footwork:
sidestep.
shimmy sidestep.
crossover variation.
kicksteps.

Check out the tutorial I learned from
.

A pose:
baby freeze.

This dude helped.

And floorwork:
six-step variations like the CC’s
backspin (is this considered floorwork?)

I learned the six-step variations from Tim Ferriss and the backspin from the Ninja.

After a quality practice today where I went over all the new moves I’ve learned, I’m stoked to show you my progress.

As always, if you have any tips then comment.  I’m not going to start crying if you say I need to work on something.  So be honest.  For real.

Day 19: practice actually works

Today is one of those practices where my body is drenched in sweat and I’m reminded of how much more fun b-boying is than weight lifting.  And I’ll do anything I can do to avoid a sleeveless shirt bicep competition two to three times a week.

I can tell a difference in my dancing.  When I hear a song, I’m listening for the beat, and here’s the crazy part – sometimes I actually hear it.  Nineteen days ago I just kinda moved around when it felt good.

A lot happens in your mind when you feel like you’ve gotten better at something.  I’m excited to show you my day 20 update video, it’ll mainly show a lot of footwork I’ve learned, and a few other moves like the backspin and baby freeze.

Tip of the day: Practice actually works, so keep doing it.
